WHAT IS PROPELLER STAGE ONE IN HERTFORDSHIRE?

Propeller Stage One: Revolutionising Film Production in Hertfordshire

The University of Hertfordshire is breaking new ground with the launch of Propeller Stage One, a cutting-edge film studio designed to meet the growing demands of the booming film and TV industry. This state-of-the-art facility is part of a larger effort to position Hertfordshire as the UK's "Hollywood", supporting the region's status as the top filming destination in the country.

Addressing Industry Needs

Responding to the British Film Institute's (BFI) UK Skills Review, which predicts the need for over 21,000 new jobs in the creative sector by 2025, Propeller Stage One is set to deliver high-quality training in both creative and technical fields. The studio aims to replicate the standards of major film studios, providing students with hands-on experience and practical skills to succeed in the industry.

Dr Stephen Partridge, Dean of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire, emphasises the importance of this initiative: “Propeller Stage One is innovative in bridging skills gaps across the sector, working with education providers to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the region.”

Hertfordshire: A Premier Filming Destination

Home to major film studios like Elstree, Warner Brothers Leavesden, Sky, and BBC Studioworks, Hertfordshire has been the backdrop for blockbuster hits such as Barbie, The Crown, Jurassic World, Harry Potter, and EastEnders. Propeller Stage One will only strengthen the county's reputation as a film production hub by nurturing the next generation of talent. In partnership with the Hertfordshire Film Office and Screen Hertfordshire, the initiative seeks to expand the county's global influence in film and TV production.

Supporting New Talent and Diversity

Propeller Stage One is committed to inclusive education, offering opportunities to students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. The studio provides reduced rates for independent production companies that offer students hands-on experience. This ensures that graduates are equipped with practical skills in various disciplines, such as production design, visual effects, sound design, and film finance.

Dr Partridge added: “Propeller Stage One will ensure that Herts graduates, regardless of their background, are among the most skilled professionals entering the workforce, ready to meet the demands of the industry.”

Bridging Education and Industry

Propeller Stage One is not just about training—it’s about making Hertfordshire the next big filmmaking destination. By collaborating with local councils, industry leaders, and education providers through initiatives like Screen Hertfordshire, the project creates a cohesive ecosystem that benefits students, businesses, and the wider community.

As Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss CBE, Chair of the Screen Hertfordshire Advisory Board, stated: “As Hertfordshire becomes the fastest-growing centre for film and TV, it’s crucial that young talent is trained and prepared to support the expanding studios.”

Real-World Experience for Students

Propeller Stage One offers students the chance to gain real-world experience by working on live commercial projects, providing them with vital industry contacts and practical knowledge. This “learning-by-doing” approach aligns with the University of Hertfordshire’s goal to provide career-focused education that prepares graduates to enter the workforce immediately after graduation.

A Bright Future for Hertfordshire's Film Industry

With the continued growth of Hertfordshire’s film and TV sector, Propeller Stage One will play a pivotal role in developing the talent pipeline needed to sustain the industry. The University of Hertfordshire has already made its mark in animation and visual effects, ranking in the top five in the UK. The addition of Propeller Stage One is expected to further enhance the university’s reputation as a leader in film and media education.

Adrian Hawkins OBE, Chair of Hertfordshire Futures, highlights the importance of nurturing new talent: “Hertfordshire is fast becoming a globally significant cluster for film and TV, and Propeller Stage One will ensure that the region continues to thrive by developing the next generation of industry professionals.”
