HOT SEAT: INTERVIEW WITH LOCATION MANAGER BEN CARTER
At Silverstein Locations, we’re passionate about connecting the dots between creative visionaries and stunning spaces. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ben Carter, a seasoned location manager with nearly two decades of experience, to dive into his career, the art of location management and the advice he has for budding professionals. Whether you're a production company scouting locations or a property owner considering listing your space, Ben’s insights are invaluable.
The Journey to Location Management
Ben Carter’s career in the film industry began with exploration.
“I tried my hand at a few different roles—camera assisting, production coordination and even working on shows like Big Brother and The Graham Norton Show. But it wasn’t until I took on the role of location manager for a short film post university that I found my niche,” Ben recalls.
Despite a degree in media and film production that Ben admits wasn’t particularly career-focused, it laid the groundwork for his understanding of the industry. His hands-on experience—from navigating film commissions to managing high-pressure projects—sparked his passion for location management.
Finding Success in the Field
Transitioning into full-time location management in 2006, Ben quickly made a name for himself. His first feature film project, though challenging, was a turning point.
“I’d talk to crew members—gaffers, camera operators—and promise them I’d do everything to make the shoot run smoothly. It’s about being honest and proactive,” Ben shares.
His dedication paid off. Within 18 months of establishing his first team, they completed 250 projects—an impressive feat that set the foundation for his thriving business.
The Creative Role of Locations
Ben’s perspective on locations goes beyond logistics.
“The location is often the lynchpin after the script. Whether it’s a stunt-heavy scene or a picturesque UK commercial, the location drives the narrative and the production,” he explains.
From securing a cliffside for a bus stunt reminiscent of The Italian Job to coordinating multiple iconic UK locations for an advert, Ben’s team thrives on solving complex logistical challenges.
The Key to Securing Unique Spaces
When asked about his process for landing extraordinary locations, Ben emphasises preparation and relationships.
“Start by identifying your timeline. For example, closing a famous London street or filming at Terminal 5 takes time and collaboration with councils and private entities,” Ben says.
His team’s network—spanning location managers, location scouts and assistants across the UK—is instrumental in gathering feedback and aligning with client visions.
Advice for Aspiring Location Managers
For those considering a career in location management, Ben offers sage advice:
Share Concerns: “Don’t shoulder all the responsibility. Discuss challenges with producers and your team. Collaboration often leads to solutions.”
Politeness is Paramount: “You’re working with property owners unfamiliar with film production. Trust and professionalism go a long way.”
Understand the Crew’s Needs: “Know what gaffers, sound engineers and other crew members require to do their jobs effectively.”
Play the Long Game: “Building lasting relationships with councils and property owners is key. You’ll rely on these connections repeatedly.”
Building a Thriving Business
Ben’s team now operates as a well-oiled machine, handling everything from small-scale commercials to large international projects.
“We’ve grown to a team of five full-time location managers, supported by scouts and assistants. Each year, we take on a large-scale project—often for an American production—that involves the entire team,” Ben notes.
His business, trading under his own name since 2006, has become synonymous with excellence in location management.
